Emmy-Award winning sportscaster Al Michaels was sent to the penalty box for having a blood alcohol level at the presumed level of intoxication, as he was arrested at a drunken driving checkpoint in Santa Monica, a police sergeant said.

Michaels, the color commentator on NBC’s flagship “Sunday Night Football” broadcasts, drove into the checkpoint in the 1800 block of Lincoln Boulevard at about 10 p.m. Friday, said Santa Monica police Sgt. William Heric.

“He was evaluated for suspicion of DUI, brought to the station for a breathalyzer test, and it came out .08, which was at the legal limit, so he was released on a citation at about 3 or 4 in the morning,” Heric said.

“He was cooperative and polite the whole time,” the sergeant noted.

Michaels was released on his own recognizance, with no bail required.

California law holds that a driver with a blood alcohol level at .08 percent or greater is presumed to be drunk. Also, a person can be charged with drunken driving if it can be reasonably proved that any level of alcohol or
drugs influenced their ability to drive.

Michaels, a commentator on NBC Sunday Night Football, is scheduled to appear at LAX Municipal Court June 26.

“We are aware of the situation and we’ve spoken to Al,” said NBC Sports Group Senior Vice President of Communications Greg Hughes.

Michaels first came to national attention when he shouted “do you believe in miracles?” at the improbable end of the 1980 Olympic hockey championship game, where the United States beat the presumed-invincible U.S.S.R.
